Are neo-Nazis and the future Presidency of Trump convincing Anti-Gunners to Buy AR15s? Most of us Pro-Gunners, including myself, have been trying, for as long as I can remember, to sell gun-control activists on guns. I’ve tried using history, logic, and what-if scenarios to turn these stubborn gun grabbers from voting our rights away – but have failed to convince them that they’ll be safer owning a gun.
Many believed and expected the election of Donald Trump, whose candidacy was backed by the NRA, to bring an end to the panic of buying guns- panic we have witnessed after every shooting and gun law during Obama’s Presidency. Even shares in gun manufacturing companies dropped by as much as 18% following Trumps victory.
But instead, FBI background checks for gun transactions soared to a new record for a single day: 185,713 during last years Novembers Black Friday sales event. A significant number of these sales have been to groups traditionally against guns. Sales haveincreased substantially due to fears of hate crimes that have also increased in reports following Trump’s victory.
Lara Smith, national spokesman for the Liberal Gun Club, says her organization has seen a noticeable increase since November of over 10% in paid members within a few weeks of the election. “Many of the new members are reluctant first-time gun owners”, says Smith concerned that isolated acts of aggression against minorities could escalate into something more violent, and that a Trump administration will dismantle key constitutional rights, leading to a “more fascist rule than the US has ever had,” according to Smith. Which is ironic since many liberals, prior to Trump’s victory, were completely at peace with removing or limiting other constitutional rights they disagreed with.
